Executive Director, University Advancement
Westfield State University

Primary Duties/Responsibilities
Westfield State University seeks candidates for the position of Executive Director of University Advancement. Through direct and indirect cultivation of major gift donors, the executive director is responsible for substantially increasing the levels of participation and dollars in annual giving, endowment assets and capital campaign projects. Paramount is the expectation to assist the university president and the Westfield State Foundation, Inc. board in advancing the university in its mission.

The executive director is accountable for working effectively with, friends, community leaders, employees, donors, and students from various and diverse backgrounds, delivering high quality and effective university marketing and public relations. The executive director is also an effective partner with the university president and a valuable team member with the vice presidents, deans and others in building understanding about, relationships with, and investments in, the university.

University Advancement consists of the following units: Development (major gifts, annual giving and planned giving), and Research and Advancement Services. The executive director reports directly to the university president, is a member of the President’s Cabinet and serves as a member of the Foundation as Clerk of the Corporation.


Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.

Five or more years of proven management success in university advancement, development and public relations, or equivalent experience in business development, political campaigning or charitable organizations such as United Way,etc.


Preferred Qualifications
Demonstrated measurable success in acquisitions of major gifts from individuals, corporations, foundations and government agencies, as well as capital campaign leadership experience.

Demonstrated success in securing planned and deferred gifts.

Demonstrated superior communication skills and the ability to collaborate and work effectively with administrators, faculty, staff, alumni and students, and members of the community and corporate world.

In-depth knowledge of the intricacies of public higher education.

Mastered all aspects of board governance.
