The Position
Pasadena City College is hiring a part-time, international counselor with the anticipated start date of November 1, 2013.

Responsibilities of the Adjunct International Counselor
• Provide counseling to F1 international students on academic issues, cultural, social and personal adjustments.
• Assist F1 students in interpreting certificate, associate degree and transfer related information in written and computerized form.
• Assist F1 students in assessing, planning and implementing their immediate and long-range goals.
• Lead international student group counseling and registration sessions for new and continuing F1 students.
• Assess student’s aptitudes, abilities and interests and advise them regarding current and future employment trends.
• Maintain up-to-date information on F1 regulations, policies and practices pertaining to international students.
• Provide career exploration and goal setting strategies utilizing appropriate career resources.
• Assist in organizing new student orientation, cross-cultural events, and informational workshops.
• Assist F1 students in more effectively handling a variety of personal challenges which may be interfering with their personal, educational and/or career goals.
• Teach credit personal growth and career development classes.
• Serve as a liaison between the Counseling Office, Languages division, and International Student Center (ISC).
• Participate in appropriate professional organizations, attend conferences and workshops to upgrade skills and knowledge.
• Serve on college governance committees, participate in College and Student Services meetings; perform other duties as assigned.
• Refer F1 students to appropriate resources on campus. i.e. Psychological services, tutorial services, etc.

Minimum Qualifications
• Master’s degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling, OR a valid California Community College Counselor Credential, OR the equivalent. (Degree must be posted by October 11, 2013. Some degrees may require equivalency. It is the applicant’s responsibility to provide documentation to support equivalent qualifications.) Note: A license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline, pursuant to Title 5, Section 53410.1.
• Work experience related to collegiate academic and/or international student counseling.
• Ability to facilitate groups and workshops.
• Experience working in a multi-ethnic environment with students who have a variety of learning styles and abilities.
• Experience working with F1 international students.
• Community college counseling experience.
• Knowledge of effective instructional methods and strategies to increase the persistence, success and retention of international students.
• Ability to teach in a learning community environment.
• Knowledge of career development methods, techniques and instruments.
• Knowledge of F1 international student regulations.
• Experience working with a variety of computer systems which normally support a counseling environment.
• Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
• Experience living in a non-US cultural context and/or adapting to life in a second culture.

The Assignment
Part-time international counselor position, beginning November 2013. The assignment will require some evening coverage as part of load.

Twenty-three (23) hours per week. The college has two 16-week semesters and a summer intersession. The department offers a full range of services beginning at 7:00 a.m. and ending at 7:00 p.m. Counselors must be available anytime within those hours.

Successful applicants will be paid at an hourly rate to be determined from the Adjunct Credit Nonteaching Faculty Salary Schedule which is available on-line at www.pasadena.edu.
