Position Summary:
Philanthropic resources provide margin of excellence funding for college programs, facilities, scholarships and special projects that result in tangible benefits to the learners and communities we serve. The purpose of the Major Gifts Officer is to increase philanthropic resources across all programs and operating units of the College of the Mainland by achieving the following results:
  • Building dynamic, trusting relationships with volunteers, donors, prospective donors, foundations, corporations, professional advisors, faculty, staff and COM retirees
  • Communicating the COM vision, mission and strategic initiatives to volunteer and philanthropic audiences
  • Cultivating and soliciting new donors of major gifts, matching college needs with donor interests
  • Retaining current donors and successfully encouraging their increased gifts to COM, matching college needs with donor interests, and
  • Demonstrating responsible stewardship.

    Under the supervision of the Executive Director of COM Foundation and Resource Development, the Major Gifts Officer will develop and implement strategies for a major gifts fundraising program to increase funds raised from individuals, corporations and foundations. The position is directly responsible for raising major gifts ($5k and up) by actively managing a focused portfolio of major gift prospects and donors. This includes development and execution of strategies working with appropriate Institutional Advancement division team members, Cabinet, faculty and/or academic staff to substantially grow and expand the major gift base to meet fundraising goals. Responsibilities include the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of major gift prospects and donors independently and in coordination with campus stakeholders including Executive Director, other staff, leadership, volunteers and the President.

    Job Duties:

    Experience in building relationships internally and externally with donors and strategic partners
    Collaboratively initiate, develop, propose and implement strategies for solicitation of major gifts
    Achieve agreed upon annual goals for face-to-face visits, proposals and gift revenue
    Ability to travel locally and regionally and work outside normal business hours to visit prospective donors and give presentations regarding the benefits of support College of the Mainland through the Foundation
    Build relationships with necessary academic partners to achieve goals and priorities of COM
    Attend and participate in meetings, school and Alumni Association events and campaign meetings as well as other activities as assigned and appropriate
    Contribute to team efforts by accomplishing related tasks and special projects as requested
    Articulate the colleges campaign fundraising priorities and gift opportunities
    Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and ability to navigate through computer database systems and software
    Excellent customer service skills; anticipates customers needs and responds accordingly and timely
    Excellent written & verbal communications skills; proven ability to communicate complex and/or sensitive data. Experience creating and delivering effective presentations with skill and confidence
    High organization skills with strong attention to detail
    Ability to evaluate complex problems and complicated challenges to provide solutions that will achieve broad objectives. Experience in taking initiative to solve issues
    Other duties may be assigned as appropriate



    Minimum Education/Training/Experience:
    Bachelors degree and at least three years of professional fundraising including annual gifts and/or major gifts experience required.

    Preferred Education/Training/Experience:
    Masters degree and at least seven years of major gift experience preferred.

    Minimum Knowledge and Skills:
    Experience in fundraising large value gifts and relationship building with individuals, preferably in an educational setting
    Understanding of planned giving concepts and ability to present to donors
    Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and ability to navigate through computer database systems and software
