Clinical Supervisor I/II, Obstetrics

Summary:
The Clinical Supervisor I or II for Obstetrics is a part-time staff position with responsibility for clinical teaching and/or supervision of students in a mother/baby, OB, and/or women's health clinical setting according to the policies and procedures of the clinical site, the Department of Nursing, and the Berman School of Nursing and Health Professions. Duties include, but are not limited to, competency evaluation, planning for and assigning clinical duties to students, arranging orientation to clinical site for self and students, conducting post clinical conferences with student group(s), providing written clinical evaluation of student performance at mid-term and final periods in the semester, grading clinical written assignments, and working with SU faculty and staff to resolve issues with clinical sites and/or students. Responsibilities may also include involvement in off-campus, evening and/or weekend duties, participation in course meetings and required site orientation.

Education/Experience:
B.S. degree in Nursing is required for Clinical Supervisor I; M.S. degree or higher in Nursing is required for Clinical Supervisor II; must be a registered nurse licensed in Maryland or another Compact State with recent experience in the relevant specialized field of practice; College level teaching experience is preferred, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Physical Requirements:
Medium work: exerting up to 40 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Requires physical abilities consistent with a busy college and/or clinical environment on a campus with buildings, laboratories, or other sites separated by some distance. Sitting, standing, walking, talking, hearing, keyboarding, and repetitive motions. Close visual acuity. Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions and potential exposure to airborne and blood borne pathogens. Position requires additional hours for meetings and events, including days, evenings, and weekends outside of the regular clinical hours. Position requires sitting and standing for long periods of time and the ability to speak clearly and effectively for an extended period of time.

Essential Functions:
  • Engage in clinical supervision activity totaling no more than the equivalent of seven clinical groups per calendar year.
  • Provide supervision and instruction to students in a clinical and/or skills laboratory setting.
  • Collaborate with the course coordinator and/or instructor to facilitate student learning in the clinical setting based on theoretical concepts taught in the classroom including planning clinical time and patient assignments to reinforce specific learning objectives.
  • Coach students and/or demonstrate nursing care in a variety of clinical situations, including hospitals, out-patient clinics, the home care setting, etc.
  • Evaluate student performance of clinical skills, including the demonstration of the role of caregiver.
  • Evaluate written and oral assignments.
  • Meet with students to discuss their performance of clinical skills and patient care, including performance issues and methods for improvement as needed.
  • Participate in course meetings, required orientation per clinical setting, and student meetings.
  • Submit written reports of progress on each student to the clinical course coordinator and/or instructor as requested.
  • Participate in the Clinical Supervisors Development Workshop in each semester in which one or more clinical groups are supervised.
