Department Information

The University of Nevada, Reno's (UNR) deep connection to mining is no coincidence, given its proximity to Virginia City, the birthplace of the Comstock Lode. For 150 years, mining has been an integral part of the university's identity, carrying forward the legacy of John Mackay. The mining and metallurgical engineering department housed at Mackay School of Earth Sciences and Engineering has been central to both the university's success and the development of Nevada, a state whose history and people are intricately linked to mining.

Today, Nevada stands as the fifth-largest gold producer in the world, but its contributions to the nation's sustainable future are growing. The state is home to seven of the largest lithium deposits in the United States, including the world's largest, located just a few hours north of the university. This positions UNR, and the Mackay School, at the forefront of a new era in mining - one that could see the state transition from its gold and silver-rich past to a lithium-powered future. Hence, the department of mining and metallurgical engineering remains a vital hub for students and professionals seeking to advance their careers while contributing to the nation's shift toward sustainable resource development.
