Examples of Duties
Pay: $44/hr.
Summary:
Reporting to the Director and Academic Director of the Upward Bound Program, this person would teach assigned course material during the summer sessions. He/She is responsible for the physical and emotional well-being of the participants while in the classroom, develops and administers evaluation instruments for academic achievement in their class, communicates any and all problems to the Director, and attends on campus and off-campus meetings at the request of the Director.
Duties:
- Prepare syllabus for assigned summer course - biology, chemistry, physics, math, language arts, foreign language, computers, college readiness courses, etc.
- Send list of needed books and supplies to Project Director 2 months before start of summer session.
- Teach assigned course(s) in 6 week summer program
- Attend weekly staff meetings
- Work with classroom assistant so as to prepare him/her to better assist the participants
- Report daily attendance, quiz/exam scores, preparation, participation and behavior of students
- Report 3 week progress reports and final grades of students to Academic Director
- Provide one 1-hour SAT/ACT review session as required
- May be asked to Supervise field trips as required
- May be asked to drive College vans to transport students as needed
Qualifications
REQUIREMENTS
Education
Graduation from an accredited college with a Bachelor's degree supplemented by New Jersey teaching certification in the subject area assigned to them for high school aged students.
Experience
Teaching experience preferred in the subject area assigned and preference for candidates with experience teaching in an urban, inner-city environment.
Other
Must have a clean criminal background check and cleared to work with minors.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Wide knowledge of the subject matter and techniques essential to performance of the specific responsibilities assigned.
- Ability to advise and counsel students and others concerning high school and college academics.
- Ability to work well with teenagers from urban, inner-city school districts.
- Sensitivity to the needs of low-income families.
