Pay Rate/Range: The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $69,500 to $82,000/year. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience; the budget for the position; and the application of fair, equitable, and consistent pay practices at the University. The full salary range for this position is $69,500 to $123,500/year.

Brief Summary of Job Duties:

Under General Direction, the Production Manager manages and supervises the production-related logistics and requirements (i.e. personnel, budget, facilities, production needs) for all Department of Theater/Dance presentations and classroom activities, including plays, dance concerts, student-directed projects, one-act plays, new works festival, workshop presentations and special events.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • 4-6 years of professional work in theatrical/performing arts environment.
  • 1-3 years of managing staff, schedules and budgets.
  • Mastery level knowledge in multiple technical theater productions areas such as lighting, sound, video, costumes, hair/make-up, properties, scenery, scenic treatment, and technical aspects, etc.
  • Proficient in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Strong problem recognition / avoidance / resolution skills.
  • Solid knowledge of project management.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of managing staff, and functioning in a leadership role.
  • Ability to work independently or with a team.
  • Ability to work effectively while under pressure.
  • Strong time-management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master of Fine Arts (MFA) or related area and/or relevant experience / training.

Job Functions and Percentages of Time:
  • 45% Production Management - Manages and supervises technical, event-staging requirements of all departmental productions including plays, dance concerts, student-directed productions, one-act plays, new works and workshop productions and presentations for both theater and dance. Working closely with the faculty Director of Performance and in concert with the Sr. Public Events Manager (Community Relations Manager for Performing Arts), manages production-related resources and labor throughout the technical, preview and performance process of multiple departmental productions. Schedules and conducts all production-related meetings with departmental staff and campus representatives as appropriate. Participates in the general logistical planning of the annual series of Theater and Dance events (main stage and second stage season), including show selection, and the scheduling and budgeting of all technical aspects for each production series. In addition to direct reports and other production staff, also works closely with administrative staff and directly with teams of production-oriented faculty members.


  • 15% Personnel - Schedules and supervises technical performance event personnel, including Sr. Theater Production Supervisor (Technical Director), Theater Production Supervisor (Costumes and Make-up Area Manager), Teaching Assistants assigned to the production area, limited (temporary) and student hires as well as special event staff. Oversees compliance with applicable personnel policies and procedures pertaining to university faculty, staff and students. Recruits, trains and supervises student stage managers, guiding and assessing programmatic needs in relation to the creation of student support teams. Acts as academic supervisor of record for these students. Recruits, trains and supervises limited hire stage managers if necessary. Creates schedules for and facilitates regular production staff meetings, coordinating other campus staff attendance as necessary.


  • 15% Budgeting/ Administration - In consultation with the CAO, the faculty Director of Performance and the Chair, establishes budgets, manages and approves spending (production supplies and materials, payroll, studio classroom equipment and furniture, production equipment and supplies) for departmental productions and maintenance of production-related facilities. Responsible for fiscal oversight of annual guest artist allocations. Initiates negotiations with guest artists (designers, composers, choreographers, fight choreographers, and more) to establish acceptable professional fees and payment timelines, adhering to campus policy; acts as company manager for each guest residency, arranging as necessary for guests' travel, lodging and miscellaneous subsistence needs, all within applicable university policy. Custodian of departmental petty cash fund.


  • 15% Facilities Management - Oversees complex scheduling of departmental facilities including nine rehearsal rooms and four theaters for public performance, production and class-related activities. Responsible for the maintenance, supervision and security of departmental performance venues, studios, shops, as well as other spaces on department inventory. Issues keys and security codes and, in consultation with Physical Facilities and (if necessary) the Office of Public Safety, inputs and maintains records in campus electronic access system. Maintains all keys on inventory.


  • 5% Event Coordination - Facilitates production needs of students in class-related activities and provides logistical support for a variety of departmental annual events, including departmental convocations, award ceremonies, visiting artists (as arranged by department and other campus units, i.e. Arts & Lectures), distinguished guests and special presentations. Answers all inquiries from the on-campus community and off-campus entities in regard to the use of departmental facilities and related departmental production resources. Approves and schedules use of facilities and resources by these non-departmental groups, executing facility use permits through the Contracts & Property Office. Makes necessary arrangements with various university departments (Facilities Management, Design and Construction, Office of Student Life, Transportation and Parking Services, Media Services, Public Safety and Public Events) concerning events that are open to the public and held in departmental venues. Follows through in an administrative capacity to ensure adherence to terms of usage, as defined in facility agreements. May provide tours of facilities for special groups and university events.


  • 5% Miscellaneous - Provides information to the chair as requested. Attends and participates in faculty and standing departmental committee meetings as necessary. Serves as department safety officer and also responsible for departmental training for use of Automatic External Defibrillator (AED). Maintains records of this equipment. In consultation with CAO, prioritizes varied resource allocation requests for general department needs.
