St. Thomas Aquinas College is seeking a dynamic and engaging astronomer to operate our new state-of-the-art telescope and astronomy center. This part-time faculty and outreach role is ideal for an individual with expertise in observational astronomy, a passion for public engagement, and a talent for making complex astronomical concepts accessible to diverse audiences. The successful candidate will teach one astronomy course per semester, host monthly public observation nights, and support outreach efforts to engage students, families, and community members in the wonders of the night sky. While prior experience operating telescopes is preferred, training will be provided. The Astronomy Coordinator will work under the supervision of the Dean of the School of STEM, and will also work closely with the STEM Lab Manager, who will oversee telescope and dome maintenance and provide operational support.
About the SKAE Astronomy Center & Telescope:
The SKAE Astronomy Center at St. Thomas Aquinas College is a brand-new facility dedicated to astronomy education, research, and public outreach. The center houses a 24-inch Cassegrain telescope, manufactured by DFM Engineering, and designed for high-quality observational astronomy. The facility includes a fully equipped classroom for instructional use, allowing students and visitors to explore the cosmos through both theoretical and hands-on learning experiences. The Astronomy Coordinator will play a key role in utilizing this cutting-edge facility to enhance STEM education, inspire the next generation of astronomers, and engage the community in the wonders of space.
Responsibilities:
Teach up to two evening courses per semester (e.g., Modern Mysteries of Astronomy).
Host one observation night per month, guiding students and the public in using the telescope for astronomical viewing.
Engage with diverse audiences, including college students, families, business leaders, and community groups, to promote astronomy education.
Assist with outreach efforts, including campus events, K-12 partnerships, and collaborations with local organizations.
Operate the observatory's telescope and equipment to facilitate educational and public engagement experiences. Telescope and dome maintenance will be coordinated by the STEM Lab Manager.
Qualifications:
Preferred: Master's degree or higher in Astronomy, Physics, or a related field.
Experience in observational astronomy, including the operation of telescopes and related equipment (formal training available).
Teaching experience, preferably at the college level, with the ability to make astronomy engaging and accessible.
Strong communication and public speaking skills, with experience engaging diverse audiences.
Passion for outreach and education, with a commitment to making astronomy accessible to the broader community.
Salary Range:
The salary range for this part-time position is $15,000-$20,000 per year. When extending job offers, St. Thomas Aquinas College carefully considers factors such as (but not limited to) the role's responsibilities, the candidate's experience and education, essential skills, internal peer equity, budget constraints, and market trends. The provided rate reflects the College's good faith and reasonable estimate at the time of posting.
