Position Information
Hiring Department: Dean of Students

Hours: 40 hours per week, standard Monday- Friday 8:00am- 5:00pm, flexibility is required on evenings and weekends.
FLSA status: Exempt.

Purpose of Position
Reporting to the Associate Vice President/Dean of Students, the Assistant Dean of Students is responsible for the overall administration of the student disciplinary system, overseeing behavioral and academic misconduct procedures and cases, and ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local laws. This individual plays a crucial role in student rights and responsibilities, campus compliance, and the strategic assessment of student engagement.
The Assistant Dean provides supervision and direction to the Office of Community Standards and the Senior Coordinator for Student Travel and Prevention Programming, ensuring adherence to Clery, Campus Security Authority, Hazing Prevention, Alcohol Awareness, Student Domestic Travel, and Parenting Liaison requirements. Additionally, this position enhances the academic education of students through gap analysis, benchmarking, and defining strategic priorities that align with institutional goals.
This role is instrumental in measuring and assessing the overall impact of student engagement and strategically identifying ways to increase student involvement on campus. It requires collaboration with the Divisions of Student Affairs, Academic Affairs, Business Affairs, UTEP Athletics, and other university offices to support day-to-day functions and long-term initiatives.
As a member of the Dean of Students' leadership team, this individual will contribute to various capacities related to students and signature event programming. A strong commitment to a non-adversarial, educational, and learning-based conduct philosophy is essential, ensuring that all educational programs, sanctions, and hearings reinforce student development.
Essential Functions
Department and Division Leadership and Management:
Provides leadership, management, and advocacy for student success initiatives, student engagement, and compliance with institutional policies and federal regulations. This role requires a deep understanding of national trends in higher education, including Title IX, FERPA, Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, anti-hazing legislation, the Clery Act, and the Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act. The AVP/DOS ensures best practices in student conduct administration, due process policies, and student support services while adapting to the evolving needs of students.
Key Responsibilities:
- Leadership & Compliance:
- Provide leadership, management, and support to departments, units, and organizations reporting to the AVP/DOS, including Student Conduct and Student Travel programs.
- Serve as a key resource for faculty, staff, and students regarding university policies related to student life, free speech, facility usage, student travel, student organizations, and the student code of conduct.
- Oversee and ensure compliance with university policies and federal regulations affecting student affairs.
- Facilitate and coordinate student prevention programming for hazing and alcohol prevention.
- Student Success & Engagement:
- Anticipate, evaluate, and address evolving student needs to develop and implement programs that enhance student engagement and success.
- Lead graduation initiatives, including communication strategies and awareness-building activities within the Division of Student Affairs.
- Develop and implement a comprehensive communication plan that fosters student engagement, supports recruitment, and enhances student retention.
- Support and guide directors in creating and executing department assessment plans measuring student learning, engagement, and satisfaction.
- Strategic Planning & Reporting:
- Prepare executive presentations, reports, and documentation related to operations, policies, and regulatory compliance.
- Align departmental and divisional strategic goals through data-driven decision-making, assessment plans, and impact reports.
- Lead collaboration efforts across the university to align student affairs initiatives with institutional priorities.

- Strong knowledge of student conduct administration, including the use of student conduct management platforms like Maxient.
- Ability to think critically and solve problems effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

This role is pivotal in fostering a culture of student success, engagement, and compliance, ensuring that university policies and initiatives align with the evolving needs of students while maintaining institutional integrity and high-impact practices.
Institutional Compliance.
Assure compliance with laws and regulations and minimize institutional liability by systematically reviewing University compliance with federal and state-mandated reporting and disclosure requirements under the purview of the Dean of Students Office, including but not limited to the production and dissemination of notices to students and/or the university community such as the Semi-Annual Anti-Hazing.
Notification and Biennial Report, Clery Act Reporting, Student Travel.
Remain knowledgeable of federal, state, and local laws and regulations affecting areas of responsibility, creating and modifying policies, procedures, and practices to become/remain compliant, and advising others in the interpretation and application of laws and regulations as appropriate.
Ensures that staff, faculty, and students maintain appropriate certifications, training and/or awareness of campus, state and federal policies, procedures, protocols and resources through the development and facilitation of training programs, educational materials and online modules and platforms.
The Assistant Dean may assume responsibilities for the Dean of Students in his/her absence and communicate with important stakeholders on behalf of the Dean and the Office.
Serves as a member of the University-wide on-call/duty rotation.
Participates in various committees, professional trainings, industry conferences, and conventions.
Nights and weekend\ availability for work may be required.
Some travel may be required.
Knowledge of all Microsoft Office software, and ability to learn and use institutional software systems.
Complies with all State and University policies.
Other duties may be assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Carries out supervisory responsibilities under the organization's objectives, policies and applicable laws.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
Education: Master's degree in student development, higher education, or related field.
and
Experience: Seven (7) years post master's professional, student affairs work experience with progressive responsibility at a college or university.
A strong record of proven success assessing student success and compliance regulation.
Supervisory experience and an ability to plan strategically, collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, develop and fiscally manage budgets and resources.
Experience in facilitating workshops, training staff, students, and faculty.
Experience in decision-making, problem solving and the ability to work in a diverse environment, well-developed skills in assessing organizational effectiveness and identifying areas of strength as well as needs for improvement.
Preferred Qualifications:
Ten (10) years post masters, professional student affairs experience at a college or university.
Demonstrated professional involvement in NASPA, ACPA, regional student affairs organization, or other professional organization.
Excellence as a manager of complex organizational processes, heavy reliance on assessment data to inform decisions, elevated supervisory and professional development skills.
Proven success working with students, parents, administrators, and faculty.
Experience with campus-wide co-curricular transcripts, engagement-tracking software.
